Walking Together for Suicide Awareness and Hope in St. Pete
On October 24, 2026, I joined a suicide awareness walk in St. Pete from 9 to 10 a.m. Taking part was an opportunity to stand with others, support suicide prevention, and remember that every life touches people in ways we may never fully see.
A job opportunity, a helping hand with a difficult situation, or someone taking the time to listen can stay with us for years. We do not always get the chance to tell people how much their kindness means. That is something I want to carry with me beyond this walk.
The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention
The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, or AFSP, is a nonprofit whose mission is to save lives and bring hope to those affected by suicide. Its work includes funding scientific research, providing public education, advocating for suicide prevention, and supporting people affected by suicide loss.
AFSP’s Out of the Darkness Walks bring communities together to raise awareness and funds for this work. They also create space for remembrance and connection. People can participate, volunteer, or support the foundation’s programs through their local chapter.
Making room for honest conversations
Suicide deserves a compassionate, serious conversation. People experiencing emotional pain deserve to be heard without judgment. Families and friends grieving a suicide loss deserve patience, support, and space to remember the person they loved.
We can make our everyday conversations more welcoming by listening without rushing to give advice, taking someone’s concerns seriously, and encouraging them to seek professional support when they need it. Nobody should have to feel ashamed of asking for help.
For someone who is grieving, support can be as practical as bringing a meal, helping with an errand, or checking in after the first few weeks have passed. We do not need perfect words to offer our time and care.
Keeping awareness alive after the walk
Participating reminded me to be more intentional about showing appreciation and staying connected. I want to keep making time for people and support organizations working to prevent suicide.
